Spotlights - Wednesday 10th January

Spotlights is a bi-monthly short film night run by Whirlygig Cinema that offers new and established filmmakers the chance to screen a portfolio of work in front of a live audience. In a special collaboration with the 10th London Short Film Festival, Whirlygig Cinema will take over Trangallan for three nights to welcome filmmakers who worked on the nine films that have won the festival over the course of its decade-long history.

Spotlights will take place on 8th, 9th and 10th January. Doors 7pm. Tickets £4, or £10 for 3 nights (special online price). Booking is essential due to limited capacity.

Jes Benstock

Director of ORDERS OF LOVE -winner of LSFF 2005

Born in Glasgow in 1964 Jes has a background in theatre and comedy. He started making films in Edinburgh in the mid 1980s while writing and performing satirical comedy with the award winning Merry Mac Fun Show. His well regarded feature debut was THE BRITISH GUIDE TO SHOWING OFF with a UK cinema release in 2011 and many international film festival appearances. Award winning films include THE BOX with Tilda Swinton (2m Youtube hits), POOF, ORDERS OF LOVE and THE HOLOCAUST TOURIST (pictured).

Chris Allen / The Light Surgeons

Christopher Thomas Allen is a pioneering media artist and filmmaker from London. He is the remaining founder and director of multi-media collective The Light Surgeons and established the company after studying Media Design at Portsmouth University in 1995. His work has always crossed a diverse range of different media; from his back ground in graphic design and VJ culture he has gone on to direct many award winning short films, create several major installation projects in national museums and tour several critically acclaimed live audio visual performances that have helped define the practice of live cinema internationally.

David Liddell

David Liddell is an award winning Cinematographer and graduate of the NFTS Cinematography MA. His undergraduate film HIKIKOMORI was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Short Film and won the Best Cinematography Award at Scottish Students on Screen.

He will be discussing his working process and relationship with close friend and frequent collaborator, writer/director Ruth Paxton, as well as discussing how he develops visual ideas with other directors, through preparatory discussion to on set execution and fine tuning in post. These thought will be illustrated with clips.
David currently works professionally shooting Television Commercials, Music Promos and Documentaries.
