Spotlights - 12th June

Launching in April 2012, Whirlygig Cinema and Trangallan will present Spotlights - a series of short film nights focusing closely on the work of the next generation of filmmakers.

Each event will feature films and talks by three up-and-coming directors, providing audiences with a gripping insight into their work and practise whilst traversing a range of styles and genres. Screening in the cosy basement bar of Trangallan Restaurant, Newington Green, Spotlights will strive to create a regular meeting place for filmmakers and film-lovers, showcasing hand-picked emerging film talent in a relaxed and intimate environment.

Kimberly Jarrett

Studying Film Production at Bournemouth Film School, Kim Jarrett directed a number of productions most of which looked at music’s interaction with visual non-narrative imagery. In her last year at Bournemouth, she directed a short film in India in conjunction with the Film & Television Institute of India, one of India’s finest film schools. The production ‘Blue Palace’ went on to be officially selected for a number of screenings. After completing her short film ‘Focus’ for Straight8 which screened in Cannes, Kim went on to direct a music video for DJ Sandy Rivera on Defected’s Record Label. Kim is a 23 year old filmmaker currently residing in East London.

Johnny Blank

Johnny creates film, music video, commercial and experimental works. Johnny studied film in Melbourne before going on to establish two production companies, Blank Suburbs and coothwork. He then followed his digital agency, Agent Blank.

In 2011, Johnny decided to focus his energies entirely upon his directing career. Johnny's work has been featured on MIPFormats, FMX Conference, XMedialab, exgroundfilmfest, MTV, Clubland TV, Dance Nation TV, RAGE TV, and online sites such as promo news, the reel, radar music videos and Johnny is currently directing his first feature length documentary 'Death of a Gentleman' in London.

Tom Bailey

Bailey Tom Bailey is an artist and filmmaker. After cut his creative teeth in painting,
and household DIY, he began to make experimental short films that increasingly use
the apparatus of narrative cinema. Bailey’s films are often trying to express elusive
feelings and ideas about ourselves, and the world, which are difficult to capture in
words alone. His work so far has often been constructed around environment and
internal processes.

In recent years Bailey was invited to attend the Berlinale Talent Campus and
screened his film ‘Jittertree’ at festivals around Europe. He has received funding for
recent projects from the Roundhouse (Camden) and IdeasTap for his soon to be
finished short: ‘Street Spirit’.
